Blumentritt and Rizal: The Austrian Friend behind the Philippine National Hero

Reprinted on the occasion of the 150th birthday of Jose Rizal in cooperation with the Philippine Austrian Cultural Society, Blumentritt and Rizal is a valuable reference on the Filipinologist and his friendship with the National Hero.

The 1983 collection of essays by Harry Sichrovsky includes a foreword by Ambassador of the Republic of Austria Wilhelm Donko, a preface by Chair of the National Historical Commission of the Philippine Maria Serena Diokno, and an earlier foreword by Carlos Romulo.

Ferdinand Blumentritt was a Filipinologist long before Jose Rizal met him. Perservering in his research with a keen eye to detail, Blumentritt was considered the foremost Filipinologist in Europe, although he never really visited the Philippines. It was his immense interest in the Philippines that no doubt led him to Rizal. The book presents interesting narratives about the life and achievements of probably the closest friend of Rizal.
